Ron Hager, PH.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Exercise Sciences at Brigham Young University. Ron’s research and teaching interests include Lifestyle and Chronic Disease Prevention, Functional Fitness and Chronic Pain, and Sport Skill Instruction for Lifetime Physical Activity. Ron is active in mentoring student research and regularly presents and publishes the findings with his undergraduateand graduate students. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine.
Research Interests
During the past 25 years and currently, my research has broadly encompassed the assessment and study of components of health/wellness and to some extent risk factors for common chronic diseases. This research has included the study of children, college age adults, adults, and elderly. Methods for my research typically involves survey/questionnaire, and hands on data collection for a variety of assessments such are BMI, carotid artery IMT using diagnostic ultrasound, body composition, functional strength, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc.
Teaching Interests
Like my research interests, teaching interests are broadly based. My primary teaching responsibilities for the past 6 years have been centered on a General Education Wellness course titled the Science of Wellness (EXSC 221) and another undergraduate course for EXSC majors and the Gerontology Minor titled Lifestyle and Chronic Disease Prevention (EXSC 387). Both of these courses are large enrollment courses with 1,662 students enrolled during the 2023 academic year. My teaching passion is for course topics that can help a person change their behavior and take charge of their own good health. I have also taught 2 different graduate courses, Advanced Worksite Wellness (EXSC 661) and Functional Testing and Exercise (EXSC 625R). I also supervise EXSC 399R 002 each Fall semester for those interns that attend the Huntsman World Senior Games.
