SCHOLARSHIPS

For Undergraduate Students:

Applications Due:

1 February

To be considered for an EXSC Department Scholarship, you must apply for a university scholarship and a college scholarship. Links to these two applications can be found at the Life Sciences Scholarships page. You must also complete and submit the Undergraduate Student Scholarship Application.

Applicants must be a declared undergraduate EXSC major at BYU to apply.

If the due date of February 1st falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday when the department office is closed, you may submit your application in-person on the next workday that the department office is open.

Minimum Requirements for All Department Scholarships:

  1. The Financial Aid Office limits assistance to eight semesters of fall/winter scholarship per student.
  2. Must be a continuing student at Brigham Young University in good standing.
  3. To be considered for a department scholarship, you must also apply for a university and college scholarship. Generally, department scholarships are not awarded to students who receive other scholarships for the same semester.

Requirements for Specific Department Scholarships:

Charles J. Hart Memorial Scholarship

  1. Maintain a minimum of 12-credit hours in each semester supported by the scholarship.
  2. Completed at least 60 credit hours but not more than 140 credit hours.
Douglas C. and Joy W. Heiner Scholarship

  1. Maintain a minimum of 15-credit hours in each semester supported by the scholarship and a GPA of 3.5.
  2. Only those with an interest in pursuing an M.D. will be considered.
  3. Completed 45 university credit hours, but not more than 140 credit hours.
A. Garth and Geraldine R. Fisher Scholarship

  1. Maintain a GPA of at least 3.0.

**All Exercise Sciences Scholarships pay half tuition for either Fall or Winter semester of one academic year

For Graduate Students:

Masters of Athletic Training Scholarships:

  1. One-year George and Ollie Scholarship through BYU Sports Medicine. Applications are due January 23rd, see Diana Clark.
  2. MAT scholarship for all second-year MAT students. Due February 1st.
  3. The RMATA student scholarship application is open NOW. You need an advocacy form from a current AT to apply. This application is due December 30th.
  4. NATA Foundation student scholarship applications will open around November 15th and will close January 15th. NATA student members are eligible to apply.

Additional MAT Opportunities:

The RMTA offers two student leadership awards: Bobby Gunn and D. Scott Linaker, and the NATA offers the Chuck Kimmel Award. All assist in paying for student attendance at the National Meeting in Philadelphia next June. If students are involved in the RMATA EEP committee, that gives them an edge in receiving this award.

The NATA Student Writing contest is open for submissions. Winners receive a monetary award, and the contest committee is working to possibly have student work published.

Masters of Exercise Sciences Scholarships:

    SENIOR STUDENT RECOGNITION AWARDS

    Graduating undergraduate seniors and graduate students are invited to apply for any of the awards listed below for which they qualify. Awardees will be recognized at the department senior celebration activity scheduled in April.

    These awards are not academic scholarships. To apply for an academic scholarship, go to the department scholarship web page.

    Application Requirements for All Awards:

    To apply for an award, you must be graduating in this academic year - meaning December of last year, or April, June, or August of the current year. Your application should reflect your overall development as a student of "faith, intellect, and character who has the skills and the desire to continue learning and to serve others throughout their lives" (Aims of a BYU Education).

    Application Requirements for Specific Awards:

    Program Recognition Awards

    Undergraduate students graduating with a major in Exercise and Wellness or Exercise Science or graduate students graduating with a MAT, MS, or PhD in Exercise Sciences may apply for a Program Recognition Award in one of the following categories.

    • Academics. This award category recognizes students for their academic growth and development as reflected by their overall/major GPA, academic honors and awards, involvement in the department as a teaching assistant, clubs, Study Abroad or other academic activities and learning experiences. This award is not based solely on overall/major GPA.
    • Research. This award category recognizes students for their involvement as a research assistant for a faculty member, conducting individual research, mentoring other students, obtaining ORCA or other sources of funding for research activities, research presentations at a professional conference, or publications.
    • Professional Development and Citizenship. This award category recognizes students for their involvement in meaningful internship experiences, volunteer or employment experiences in areas related to their major and career plans, professional organizations, workshops, seminars, or other forms of training that develop specific skills, certifications, and how they used their knowledge, skills, and abilities to serve the local, national or international communities.

    Kerie Jean Waters Athletic Training Award

    This award recognizes graduating MAT students who have demonstrated outstanding performance in their clinical rotations and commitment and dedication to the profession of athletic training. The student must have an overall GPA of at least a 3.0, be a current student member of NATA, and demonstrate professionalism in their academic and clinical experiences, a strong work ethic, motivation and initiative, and leadership among their peers.

    Physical Therapy Award

    This award recognizes undergraduate students with any degree from the Department of Exercise Sciences who have applied and been accepted to a graduate physical therapy program.

    How to Apply

    Use the Student Recognition Awards Application form to apply for any of the awards. Submit your application by March 1.

    Submit a printed copy of all your application materials, paper clipped together, without a binder or folder to the Department office in 106 SFH by 5pm on March 1. If the deadline falls on a weekend, you can submit your application materials by 5pm on the following Monday.

    Email a high resolution digital copy (jpg) of your photo to the chair of the Awards Committee.
