Disability Care

  • Location: 5870 W 10400 N, Highland, UT

Description: This program offers four different internship focuses:
    Horse Development Focus
Interns with this focus will work closely with the Horse Development Team at Courage Reins, gaining valuable hands-on experience in the training, conditioning, and care practices that ensure our horses remain safe, responsive, and well-suited for therapeutic work. Interns will be introduced to foundational horse training methodologies, with an emphasis on groundwork techniques that support the physical and emotional well-being of our equine partners. While interns may observe mounted training sessions conducted by staff, their direct participation will be limited to groundwork activities and non-riding interactions to maintain the highest standards of safety and horse welfare.

    Barn Manager Focus
Interns with this focus will work closely with the Barn Managers to gain comprehensive experience in the daily operations and equine care essential to the successful functioning of a Therapeutic Riding facility. Through hands-on training, interns will learn how to manage and support volunteers, prepare horses for therapeutic sessions, administer routine medications, and perform the essential tasks involved in barn management. As their skills and confidence grow, interns may gradually assume greater responsibility, including stepping into a leadership role under the supervision of the Barn Manager, providing a valuable opportunity to apply their knowledge in a real-world setting.

Natural Horsemanship and Therapeutic Riding Focus
Interns pursuing this focus will work closely with Horsemanship Instructors to gain in-depth exposure to the principles and practices of both Natural Horsemanship and Therapeutic Riding. The internship offers a structured opportunity to observe how instructors develop individualized lesson plans, establish client-centered goals, and facilitate skill-building sessions tailored to the needs of each rider. As the internship progresses, participants may take on increased responsibilities and begin assisting instructors with lesson preparation, goal setting, and instructional delivery—gaining valuable hands-on experience in a supportive, professional setting.

    Administrative (Non-Profit) Internship Focus
An intern with this focus will learn strategic tasks such as coordinating outreach, managing fundraising, assisting with grant writing, developing new programs, and creating awareness campaigns, all while focusing on the organization's mission rather than profit. Interns can also expect to develop essential skills like project management, communication, teamwork, and networking within the therapeutic sphere. This type of internship would work with various members of our executive team.
